Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common pathology that is routinely encountered by the clinician. While historically a "catch-all" phrase used to describe abdominal pain associated with bowel habit changes without an identifiable etiology, it is now a known pathology with specific diagnostic criteria. This presentation is designed to assist the generalist in the diagnosis and management of IBS. "Red flag" symptoms which would point to a more serious disease process are explored. Pathophysiology, appropriate diagnostic testing and management will be thoroughly discussed.
