Dermatology: Diagnosis and Treatment of Ethnic Skin

A cursory glance at any dermatology textbook will reveal multiple images of disease states primarily on 'white' skin. For this reason, even commonly diagnosed conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis may appear unfamiliar on a patient with darkly pigmented skin.

In addition to different presentations of skin disease, there are differences in the pathophysiology and function of ethnic skin, as well as the approach to treatment, which require a skill and understanding to avoid painful complications, both for patient and provider.

This session will concentrate on developing visual skills, asking key questions, and understanding treatment differences unique to today's diverse environment.
