Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis: As Close to a Cure as Possible

Psoriasis is an ancient disease found even in Egyptian mummies, but only recently have we attained a greater understanding of the underlying genetics and pathogenesis of psoriasis. These advances have led to 21st-century medications that have made psoriasis and its underlying arthritic component the topic of study and excitement. Treatment options were limited until recently and now options have expanded greatly in number and type. Practitioners require a thorough understanding of both the mechanism of action of these medications and the way they work in and on the body, particularly with the severe comorbidities often present in patients with psoriasis. This fast-paced lecture highlights key aspects of the pathogenesis and treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis to instill confidence in even the most novice practitioner.

Difficult Issues and Diseases of Dermatology

Dermatology is a daunting specialty, with over 2,700 different diseases and disorders.  This wide-ranging presentation, designed for the motivated provider, discusses multiple challenging dermatologic issues, including unexplained itching, hair loss of various kinds, brittle nails, sudden rashes, wound troubles, bleeding growths, issues of aging, and warts in sensitive places, and much more. Skills essential to dermatology practice, such as relies on observation of nuances, forming intelligent questions, and quickly categorizing finer points to determine the ultimate diagnosis and treatment, are emphasized.

Cutaneous Manifestations of Systemic Disease

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and while there are specific conditions that affect only the skin, many other, noncutaneous diseases and abnormal processes affecting the body speak through the integument. Some conditions can be straightforward, as in an adverse drug reaction or allergic urticaria, and others can be more subtle or include multiple presentations, as in viral, bacterial, and autoimmune processes or malignancies. This presentation focuses on understanding the nuances of systemic disease with cutaneous manifestations and developing a plan of action. It reviews the most common systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations and includes a plethora of images and identifying markers to help the clinician recognize and diagnose life-threatening conditions with dermatologic presentations.

The Role of Diet in Dermatology: Can It Affect Psoriasis, Rosacea, Acne, Atopic Dermatitis, and Other Skin Conditions?

Many misconceptions remain about gluten, dietary supplements, elimination diets, nuts, chocolate, dairy, sugar, and other foods, with respect to their effect on skin conditions. What does the evidence and research show? While diet fads come and go, a healthy, balanced diet continues to be important in the management of many conditions. This presentation discusses the need to practice awareness of key dietary issues in certain skin conditions.
